Barry Leitch is the composer for Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA and the lead composer for San Francisco Rush 2049 (Console). His works in both games feature a variety of sampled electronic music in the genres of Drum n Bass, Techno, and Trance. Skale Tracker was used by Barry to compose the soundtrack for both games.

Rush 2049 on Nintendo 64 featured almost every song Barry composed for the game, with the exception of 'High'. The Dreamcast version however, omitted several more songs due to the inclusion of music from three other artists, notably 'Seventies', 'Retro', and 'Credits'. Nearly all of the songs found on both the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 versions have several changes between game versions, the most significant being the song 'Stunted' played in two completely different keys.

San Francisco Rush 2049: Tournament Edition would go on to include one additional song (called 'Wingey' in the Dreamcast version) written by Barry Leitch, making it the first and only time his music would be featured in any way on arcade. This song is effectively a remixing of the song 'Night' with additional instrument samples, filters, and accommodations for the arcade's 5-channel audio hardware.

Do note that the following audio uploads are not in-game audio captures, and are instead the result of exporting Barry's source files in Fast Tracker II. As such, there may be differences between these audio tracks and those played back on actual game hardware.
</div>
Dusk is the second new track added to Tournament Edition, and is arguably the most difficult track in the whole game. Getting a good time requires near perfect driving on all three laps as many elements of the track only position correctly for perfect driving, and making one mistake can ruin everything else. Both this track and Dawn were originally from the console versions, but were revamped and brought back to the arcade. This track is the only one in all versions to receieve a revised difficulty indication on the track selection screen; In TE it was stated to be Advanced difficulty, but in SE it was increased to Extreme difficulty, though the track remained the exact same.

Track Layout
Starting at the Golden Gate Bridge like Track 1 of San Francisco Rush, the track leads players to some wide corners around Presidio that leads to Forest Hill. These jumps lead to Glen Park's windy corners and eventually the subway located on Bernal Heights. This subway is only open on laps 1 and 3, so on lap 2 players will need to maneuver through Bernal Height's technical turns. Both paths lead to Noe Valley with a very difficult corner to jump at high speeds. Finally, the finish line is right on the edge of Eureka Valley.

Fast Times Strategy
Special Edition
For lap 1, stay on the main road until the two-loop shortcut. After this shortcut, stick to the main road again, including the entirety of Glen Park. Upon Arrival at Bernal Heights, head straight into the Metro station. Take a right while avoiding oncoming trains, and hug the wall on the right side. Exit the metro station by staying to the right side of the wall while maintaining a straight direction. Slow down just a bit while in the air then after landing, turn left slightly at full speed to take a large jump over hill, using the clutch for extra airtime if needed. at the beginning of Eureka valley, take the right side entrance into a large tunnel with a fan. Inside this tunnel, follow the green arrows to perform a corkscrew shortcut to exit and complete lap 1.

On lap 2, take the shortcut with two loops once again, though this time aim for a tunnel on either the left or right side of the road upon exit. Drive through either tunnel at full speed, and aim for a large suspended platform above the main road in the center. Avoid the initial set of piston obstacles, then drive into a long pipe shortcut. This pipe shortcut starts with a left turn and a descent shortly after. Drive along the sides of the wall at full speed with minimal steering corrections to clear this section first. After descending is large left bend, followed by a large right bend, and an exit. After exiting, follow the main road to complete the second lap.

On lap 3, perform a similar set of shortcuts as done in lap 1, with the exception of the large tunnel shortcut at the end.
Timed/Switch Events
* The subway station is only open on laps 1 and 3. Lap 2 requires the normal path through Bernal Heights to be taken. The station door closes at X:XX and reopens at X:XX.
* The subway trains move back and forth at varying speeds, most of the time blocking you from crossing the tracks. The optimal timing to drive across the tracks assumes close to perfect racing for the subway being accessible on laps 1 and 3. A very slow moving train starts to cross the closest track at around 1:19 into the race, and takes a very long time to clear the path. With Advanced handling, it is required to briefly slow down as there is a train that will be in the way on lap 3. It is possible to beat the train, but it requires perfect driving. It is much easier to pass it with Extreme handling, as the extra speed gives enough time.
* At the corner of Noe Valley and Eureka Valley near the end of lap 1, there is an opening to the right side that provides an alternate path through a fan and 360° corkscrew out onto the road of Presidio. This wall opens up at X:XX and closes at X:XX.
* At the bottom of Forest Hill, there is a door that opens up on the very right for lap 2. This provides a jump to the upper platform with the moving platforms and 360° tunnel above Glen Park. This door opens at X:XX and closes at X:XX, and is not accessible on laps 1 and 3.
</div>

Dawn is the first new track added to Tournament Edition, and is one of the most difficult tracks to race. It uniquely features a sequential order of shortcuts that players must make available by driving over switches in the previous shortcut that open the next. Because of this, the three laps needed for an optimal fast time, are all driven differently from one another. The Coin placement is also different from most tracks, in that players do not have to explore the way they have for the previous Tracks, and instead just execute each shortcut correctly to obtain all 100 coins.

The track starts on a hill on Parkmerced, followed by a winding road that takes the driver through Stonestown Mall. It then continues passed several residential districts; Saint Francis Wood, and Diamond Heights. After Noe Valley, is a quick right turn that takes the driver onto a bridge directly over Mission bay. Drivers must then decide which of the two roads on Bay View, that later converge right before Potrero Hill. Passed Potrero Hill is a large right turn, followed by a left turn along Portola. Nearing the end of the lap is Excalibur (not a real location in San Francisco,) followed by a drive through Inglewood that takes the driver directly to the finish line.
Fast Times Strategy
Special Edition
On lap 1's race start, stick to the road as much as possible. After the first right turn, cut across the concrete and take the orange and blue ramp at the end of a dirt trail. Then, land diagonally inside of a building and drive over another small ramp. Drive over the STV logo at the end of the narrow parking lot. Cut across the grass on the corner of the right turn and drive over the bridge. veer to the right slightly and to go over another ramp and aim a bit to the right to land on the rooftop of a building. From here drive forward; it will lead to leaping over the gap of two buildings and heading down a ramp, passed the ramp is another STV logo. Drive through it and the banked tunnel, drive without taking further shortcuts until lap 2.

On lap 2, drive normally until you get to the first right turn, veer to the right to enter a large train station with rounded walls. Drive up the rounded walls toward the left
to perform a loop and exit the building along a suspended platform that goes over the main road. At the end of this platform is a building with a gap, drive through the gap to enter the building and toggle the STV switch. After exiting that building, align with the concrete on the left side of the road, and veer a bit toward the right, driving passed the animated arrow sign pointed right. Land on the narrow green platform, then onto the much larger one. Make a right and take the ramp, driving over another STV logo. After landing, perform similar maneuvers to the previous lap for driving into the banked tunnel; Instead of driving down a a ramp to get to the tunnel, drive slightly to the right of the ramp to drive through a pillar, then to the left onto another building before making it down toward the banked tunnel. Heading toward Excalibur, turn slightly right to position onto rooftops that lead toward a sewer. Drive into the sewer, and upon exiting drive over the STV logo on the ground. After exiting the sewer, drive toward the raised left part of the dirt ramp at the end.

For lap 3, land onto the raised train rails after taking the dirt ramp jump in lap 2. While up here, take a right to enter and Aquarium. After landing inside, drive over the STV logo and continue straight. Drive on the main road until the second Checkpoint, the make a slight right turn into a now open area cuts a cross a large part of the track. Drive into this area by taking a jump that goes over a dock and land onto a large green boat in the water. After landing on the boat, turn to the right to land back on the main track. Finish the race by following the main road.

<youtube>D4ehp8TyRGY</youtube>
Coin Locations
This is the only Track where all coins can be collected by executing all of the shortcuts during a race. As such they are in order of acquisition during the entire race instead of lap.

Diamond Heights - 12 Coins
*12 coins in a line after the first ramp shortcut on lap 1
</div>
Morning is the first track in Rush 2049 (CoinOp.) This track is the only one with the attributed difficulty of 'Novice,' as such it serves as an introductory to the mechanics the player will be learning and refining as they race more difficult tracks. Notably it is the shortest track in the game (including tracks introduced in Tournament Edition,) and features the "Lombard Jump" a series staple since the first entry, San Francisco Rush. This track would later be altered and repurposed for the Home ports of Rush 2049, and given the name 'Marina.' These changes include an additional road to the left of Lombard Street for a new backward route, and the removal of several coin locations.

Track Layout
Morning starts on Marina Boulevard followed by a 180 degree left turn that takes the driver to Lombard Street. Immediately following several intersections is the Lombard Street's crooked road; a steep, unconventional road accompanied by a trolley that the player will swiftly drive over. After the jump, the player will take several right turns in quick succession that takes the driver to Market Street; one of the longest stretches of road in the game. After a narrow right turn the driver will be placed on Van Ness Avenue; a long stretch like the previous road, but downhill with a couple of opportunities for airtime. The lap comes to an end after a descending left bend through Fort Mason that takes the player back to Marina Boulevard.

Fast Times Strategy
Special Edition
On lap 1 only, take a hard left turn onto the short road, then drive on the right side of Lombard street. Instead of performing the Lombard jump, instead drive through the glass indoor structure on the right side. Then, take the corkscrew shortcut entrance in Embarcadero, and proceed to complete the shortcut and lap.

For laps 2 and 3, take the curved/banked shortcut located behind the Palace of Fine Art. Next, drive along the green raised structure on Lombard and perform the Lombard jump. Finish the rest of laps 2 and 3 the same way lap 1 was finished.

Coin Locations
Richardson Avenue - 9 Coins
*6 coins in the C shaped tunnel around the Palace of Fine Arts, 3 on each end of the shortcut.
*2 coins behind the last of three tan colored buildings, in front of the building that says "Foreign Car Repair."
*1 inside of the Palace of Fine Arts. This coin can only be obtained on lap 3, by driving up to the Atari Logo, then driving back down to open a gate that leads to this coin.
Lombard Street - 5 Coins
*3 coins inside of the building behind glass, to the right of the Lombard Jump.
*2 coins behind a trolley on the right side, right before the Lombard Jump.
The Embarcadero - 1 Coin
*1 coin on the sidewalk corner of the building on the right, after exiting the Coit Tunnel.
Market St. - 14 coins
*2 coins inside of the green toilet unit, behind the STV logo.
*1 coin behind the glass of a taller building with elevators on the right, toward the end of Market Street.
*1 coin inside the same building as the previous coin but further ahead, in an area that is not behind glass.
*10 coins in line before the underground STV logo, along a subway track.
Seismonometron - 21 Coins
*1 coin at the very bottom, on top of a metal grate.
*20 coins in the center platform suspended by several large beams. Drive toward the center with full speed initially, then drive along the walls at an angle to get to the top of a beam.
Van Ness - 13 Coins
*1 coin toward the back left inside the building with The Great Seal of California on the right.
*1 coin on the right side of the road, behind an Arch.
*1 coin at the end of the tunnel from the underground subways that lead to above ground.
*10 coins along the corkscrew shortcut, entered by driving in the tunnel in The Embarcadero.
Fort Mason - 1 Coin
*1 coin tucked in a corner on the left, immediately after the left turn that leads to the finish line.
Atari Logo - 36 Coins
*36 coins sitting at the top of the Atari Logo only accessible on lap 3. After the Lombard Jump, drive to the left behind a trolley. Take a left turn and drive down a road that slopes upward into a tube made out of chain fence. Drive *diagonally up tube to get to the platform with coins. After collecting all 36, take the opposite tube down the Atari Logo and drive directly into a now opened ramp inside The Palace of Fine Arts to collect the last Richardson Avenue coin.
Civic Center - Unobtainable Coin
*Behind a fence between buildings on the left side, after exiting the Seismonometron turn.

Timed/Switch Events
*The Track is foggy at the start of the race, and slowly clears up during the first two minutes of the race.
*A trolley at the end of the Lombard Jump serves as a moving obstacle, moving from one end of its path to the other in ~11 seconds (full cycle takes ~22 seconds.)
*A small green toilet building on the right side of Market Street can lower its door to allow the driver to collect coins on the inside. Drive into the STV Logo in front of the unit to activate the door lowering sequence.
*A second STV Logo found underground will activate a ramp and open a wall. The ramp and wall both move for ~4 seconds, stay stationary for ~4 seconds, and move back in ~4 seconds.
*Two Subways underground acting as obstacles have their own behavior. The first one on the longer track moves back and forth between positions. The second one; shortly after on the much shorter track, is on a continuous ~7 second loop that starts once a driver has passed an area right before the first intersection (after the Palace of Fine Arts shortcut,) on the second lap.
*A stationary trolley on the left side after the Lombard Jump moves starts moving to the right side of the track at ~1:55 and ends at ~2:06.
*A fence blocking off the ramp inside of The Palace of Fine Arts can be lowered after driving to the top of the Atari Logo. It is triggered sometime during the descent down the Atari Logo.
*A ramp emerges at the end of lap 3, on the left side of the finish line. It is triggered by the player some time during lap 3, or when the timer reaches 2:46.
Noon
Noon is the second track in Rush 2049. It serves as the first of three Advanced tracks, and is generally a beginner-friendly track with a few course elements that make it just a bit more difficult than Morning. Noon (like other Advanced tracks) is medium in course length, with laps taking around eighty seconds to complete. Along the way, Drivers will likely find themselves in patches of grass or dirt due to the trickier turns in the first third of the race. Toward the end, they will also drive down Interstate 280; a long stretch of Highway that forks into two different shortcuts. This track would later be altered and repurposed for the Home ports of Rush 2049, under the new name 'Haight.' As a result, several coin areas were outright removed, but this also brought about the addition of two new shortcuts for standard races, and two additional shortcuts for backward races.

Track Layout
Noon starts on Haight-Ashbury; one of the most detailed roads spanning across all tracks. The end of Haight-Ashbury leads to a long road section in Golden Gate Park. About halfway in the left bend turns into a sharper right bend, which often send inexperienced drivers or the computer drivers into the grass. Golden Gate Park ends with an large inclined left bend leading to Sunset Boulevard; A huge stretch of road with a grass divider in the middle and several opportunities for air. Afterward, Drivers will race through Sloat Boulevard and Ocean Avenue; a windy road with many restaurants and other commercial buildings. Interstate 280 has several entrances at the end of Ocean Avenue, a proper freeway entrance and a much faster jump that sends the Driver over the freeway momentarily. In the middle of 280 lies a fork with 3 entrances: A tunnel for regular routing, and a left and right exit leading to shortcuts. Regardless of the path chosen, the lap comes to an end with a bottleneck at the beginning of Haight-Ashbury.

On Subsequent laps a ramp on a building's ledge gets raised, allowing access to a shortcut that was not available in lap 1. This shortcut begins in the middle of Golden Gate Park and requires drivers to take a yellow ramp on top of a building's ledge. That ledge leads to another ramp that takes the driver to a dirt road, allowing them to save time in the latter half of Golden Gate Park. The end of the dirt road takes the driver to a side road along Sunset Boulevard, and ends after a body of water at the start of Ocean Avenue.

Fast Times Strategy
Special Edition
On lap 1 only, follow the main road until you get to the large left turn at the end of Golden Gate Park. Once the space is clear, downshift to 3rd gear and drive onto the dirt road and continue driving along the left side of Sunset Blvd.
Continue driving down Ocean avenue and at the end, take the ledge shortcut that leads to Northbound 280. Take the right fork at the entrance of the I-280 tunnel, and drive on top of a ledge on the right side that leads to a parking garage. Exit the parking garage by driving left after the second to last pillar, and finish the lap.

On laps 2 and 3, drive along the sidewalk in front of the Conservatory of Flowers, and take the series of ramps to drive onto the dirt road. From here, take the same shortcuts as done in lap 1 to complete the lap.
Coin Locations
Haight - 30 Coins
*30 coins in a circle at the top of the "Cone of Death." Activate the timed STV logo located on the top right of the grassy hill, then drive down the hill and through the tunnel and turn right into the opened secret entrance. Drive down that path, and maneuver so that you can fall into the cone's side and ascend while driving around.
Golden Gate Park - 27 Coins
*6 coins in a rectangular formation can be found underground by driving to the entrance in the middle of the Golden Gate Park.
*14 coins inside of the Conservatory of Flowers. To access, drive around to the building's left side, and drive up the grass ramp to ascend and land into the building.
*5 coins in a line along a dirt road across from the orange building. Either cut across the grass and turn left, or take the ramp shortcut on lap 2 or 3.
*2 coins behind the Angler's Lodge (orange building) on the right side of the main road.
Sunset Blvd. - 2 Coins
*1 coin in the corner between apartment buildings and a large building. Drive off Sunset Blvd. to the left into the first of two small roads. The coin is at the end on the right.
*1 coin in between walls of the large building. Follow the walls of the large building until you get to the center alcove to find a coin on the right side toward the back.
Sloat - 1 Coin
*1 coin in a corner near apartment buildings. Turn left onto the small ascending road before the body of water. Turn left again to find a coin at the end on the right side.
Ocean Ave. - 3 Coins
*1 coin on concrete to the right. Shortly after the jump near the two yellow rectangular barriers, make a sharp left to find a coin in front of the windmill.
*1 coin tucked behind the right wall of a round, tan colored building found after the yellow, staircase-shaped building.
*1 coin in a corner near apartment buildings. Turn left onto the road right before the gas stations. Make a slight right turn to find a coin on the left.
Northbound 280 - 37 Coins
*4 coins in a line along a barricade. As soon as the Interstate 280 entrance is over, turn left and follow the highway until reaching the barricade.
*4 coins in a line above the Interstate 280 tunnel. Drive up one of the forks, turn left at the intersection up top, and turn right behind a building.
*5 coins in a line tucked behind a concrete ledge passed the left yellow arrow ramp after the intersection above the I280. Right corner coin is stacked with 2 coins.
*10 coins in a bowling-pin formation at the end of the shortcut that starts at the left elevating fork beside the entrance to the I280 Tunnel.
*5 coins in a line tucked behind a concrete ledge, on the lower left side of the grassy hill.
*1 coin inside the red parking structure, behind the second to last pillar. Reach this by taking the right side fork shortcut, or driving across an adjacent upper platform.
*8 coins in a staggered line inside of the tunnel at the base of the grassy hill.
Ocean Ave. - Unobtainable Coin
Behind a fence attached to the last building on the left, after a left turn onto the brick pavement above the Interstate 280.

Timed/Switch Events
*A ramp in Golden Gate Park will be raised starting on Lap 2. It is unknown what exactly triggers this.
*An STV logo found at the top of the grassy hill at the end of the I280 will open the gate to the Cone of Death for 20 seconds, then will slowly close for another 8 seconds.
}}
The Nintendo 64 port was released in 1997 shortly after San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition appeared in arcades. Aside from an unfinished version of The Rock that is only available after inputting a cheat, it featured the new cars and tracks that Rush The Rock added, along with other additions such as split-screen multiplayer, a circuit mode, and reverse track racing. Two unique Special cars can also be unlocked by finding keys in the tracks hidden out of sight or out of reach except with specific jumps taken correctly.

While the gameplay is faithful to the original arcade game, the HUD uses a black and yellow theme and the main menu uses a brushed steel theme designed for the console platform. The audio is also slightly worse due to needing to fit on a cartridge with only 12 megabytes of capacity versus a 1.2 GB hard drive.

Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA, a Nintendo 64 exclusive sequel would be released in 1998 with all new content not featured in the arcade versions as well as a finished version of The Rock track.

Sony PlayStation
The PlayStation port was released a few years later in 1998 by Climax Entertainment. Unlike the Nintendo 64 port, the content of this version is based off the original arcade release, with none of the Rush the Rock content. It features the three original tracks plus an additional original track, the eight original cars plus a number of new secret vehicles, and four original songs. It also features weather effects and play modes not found in the other versions.

Despite the HUD and vehicle selection menu being more accurate to the arcade, the physics differ greatly from the Nintendo 64 port and the arcade original, primarily in its heavy gravity. This, along with other factors such as blocky graphics and the changed soundtrack makes it considered a poor port by critics and general Rush fans.

Game Boy Color
A port of San Francisco Rush was slated for release on the Game Boy Color in 1996 by Digital Eclipse, but it would not be dumped online until 2022.

San Francisco Rush 2049, Tournament Edition, and Special Edition have various key combinations that can be used while racing.
